Walking with the Guildford Ramblers Group - Walking Guidance and Etiquette

Everyone is welcome on our walks but children under 18 years need to be accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult.  Please follow the instructions given by the Walk Leader.

We recommend:

  • Walkers should have suitable clothing & equipment for the weather conditions and time of year; to include a waterproof coat and walking shoes or boots.
  • The walk description will indicate whether a refreshment stop or picnic is planned. All walkers should have enough drinks, water and/or snacks as required.
  • Please make sure that you are fit enough to undertake the walk you intend to join. If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first: It is much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted.
  • For your own and others' safety please read and abide by any advice and guidelines issued by the organisers, and the instructions of the Walk Leader. Though walking is inherently one of the safest outdoor activities, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents.
  • Walk Leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. If in doubt, contact the Walk Leader in advance to discuss suitable clothing, footwear and equipment required for the walk.
  • Walkers meet at the grid reference given in the programme (the start of the walk). It is each walker’s responsibility to be at the start ready to depart at the stated time. Ideally plan to arrive at the start 10 minutes before. Post codes and/or What3Words will be given in the programme. Start locations can be found using an OS maps or www.streetmap.co.uk
  • Restricted car parking at the start point may apply, see walk programme for details.
  • In the event of bad weather, Walk Leaders, at their discretion, may cancel the walk. When possible, this will be displayed on the GR website and circulated via groups.io (email) and the GR WhatsApp group. Walkers are advised to check the website/email/phone in the event of bad weather on the day of the event (or phone the leader) before setting out to ensure that the walk has not been cancelled.
  • Registered Assistance Dogs are always permitted on walks. Other dogs are welcome though walkers who wish to bring their dogs are advised to check with the Walk Leader as some walk routes may be unsuitable. Dogs must be under control at all times and put on a short lead at the request of the Walk Leader and when near to livestock.
  • Walkers must ensure that they pay attention to road traffic when crossing and walking along roads and keep in single file. It is helpful to report other road and path users as they approach from behind or in front. Be aware that horses have priority when walking on bridleways.
  • “In Case of Emergency Cards” (ICE) are available. These contain contact details and brief medical information for use in the event of an emergency. Walkers are advised to carry a card and a small personal first aid kit.
  • Should a walker have significant health issues, make sure at least one other member of the walk is aware of these or inform the Walk Leader discreetly prior to the walk commencing. Any vulnerable or disabled adult must be accompanied by a suitably qualified or experienced carer.
  • Consideration must be shown by all walkers to the pace set by the Walk Leader. Due courtesy to the Walk Leader should be exercised by any walker who attempts to pre-empt the walk direction and walks at the head of the walk party, particularly in front of the Walk Leader.
  • All those joining a walk do so entirely at their own risk.

Extra Guidelines for COVID/FLU

During COVID we learnt to take extra steps to stay safe. These additional guidelines apply if another pandemic is announced and indeed, during outbreaks of flu:

  • Always follow the instructions given by the Walk Leader.
  • Do NOT join a walk if you feel unwell or develop any COVID/FLU symptoms.
  • Make sure your name and contact details are registered with the Walk Leader.
  • Carry a personal first aid kit and mask/gloves in case of emergency.

If you develop COVID symptoms within 48 - 72 hours of the walk, inform the Walk Leader so all can be advised.
